Staying Positive and, walking your talk
What can I say about staying positive. Letâs first talk about your students, and students that call themselves your student. You know the students that pop into class on a race day ride, and then disappear for 4 months, and come to another race day ride. They are not training, and they demand as much attention as you can give them, then you have the needy students, that donât listen, but they donât get it, remember I have been teaching for years. If I counted how many people I have taught to, and run into all over the world, it is a lot of different personalities. You are not going to be treated kindly by everyone, nor should you ever expect that in life, or should you?
You know I have the stories to tell you, and the people that have beat me up mentally, but I would rather not scan my brain to re-hash stories for you. I let most of them go. So how do you stay positive? You have to train yourself, just like you train in the gym.
Little by little you get stronger and stronger. It important to keep a journal or have a good friend to bounce off experiences to understand that sometimes it could be you, and sometimes it is the student. Either way you look at it you will grow from the experience. Learn from all experiences, and make sure you address reoccurring things that you canât resolve on your own to your coordinator, or manager. Sometimes you need a little assistance.
So now letâs talk about being a positive instructor. You go to class and you put on a cd or plug in your IPOD, and smile, say hello and have a nice day. Isnât that positive. I want to remind you that students that come into your class at night have been at school, working, taking care of children, or elder care, and their body is still in the shape of their car seat when they arrive, the last thing they want to hear is how you couldnât return you bra, or that you went out last night and saw your ex-boyfriend with another girl etc.
Bring your personality, but be positive and keep it light.
When you are teaching and speaking on the microphone, you need to be impeccable with your words, and when you are off the bike in life and everywhere you are you need to be impeccable with your words.
As part of my style and personality of teaching, I like to state affirmations during the ride that provoke and affirm positivity. An example would be: âWith every pedal stroke, you will get closer and closer to your goalâ.
Since you are now a public figure in your neighborhood that you teach in, you need to do as you say, and say what you do, or walk your talkâ¦you get it. As soon as you pull up into the gym parking lot, you are on. As soon as you
